Beginner’s Latin: Step into the World of Ancient Rome

This online course offers a comprehensive introduction to the Latin language and Ancient Roman culture, designed to be both clear and engaging for beginners. It is self-paced and includes everything you need to start reading and understanding Latin:

  • Video lessons with concise grammar explanations

  • Quizzes to reinforce learning

  • Cheatsheets for quick reference

Each video lesson includes engaging visual explanations of key Latin concepts, helping you build an intuitive understanding of grammar and absorb new vocabulary with ease. Lessons also include practical examples and step-by-step demonstrations of how Latin works in context.

The course generally follows the structure of Familia Rōmāna (LLPSI) by Hans H. Ørberg, which serves as a reader to accompany the lessons. While the course stands on its own as an independent learning resource, we strongly recommend using your own copy of Familia Rōmāna, as it provides essential reading practice that reinforces the grammar concepts taught in the video lessons. We also recommend working through the accompanying workbook, Exercitia Latīna, which offers additional exercises that complement the quizzes available on our platform. For learners seeking more detailed grammar explanations, the Companion to Familia Romana is a valuable reference.

The course is continuously updated and improved to ensure the best learning experience possible. Whether you’re studying independently or enhancing your classroom experience, this course is built to give you a strong foundation in Latin and Roman culture through a structured, immersive, and ever-evolving approach to the language of ancient Rome.

Welcome—and happy Latin learning!

My desire to learn Latin led me to the popular app Duolingo. But even after a year of Duolingo, I haven't learned as much as I have here in three months. I'm glad I discovered this offer early on and I'm still convinced that I will continue to stay here to learn. Magister Iacobus is very patient and makes it clear early on which focal points should be applied at a certain point in time. However, there is so much information in the live session that I only understand the wisdom of his words after reviewing the material ;) So, repeat the exercises and participate in the course.
